Faculty
Cal Straub was arguably ASU architecture’s most renowned and beloved faculty member. He joined ASU after reaching prominence as one of the defining architects of the post–World War II Southern California style and dean of architecture at the University of Southern California. His Introduction to World Architecture class, in which he regaled students by dressing in costume, was the most popular humanities course on campus. Straub had students camp out on studio project sites to fully capture the land’s spirit. He was chair of the department from 1977 to 1980 and was named an ACSA distinguished professor in 1988.
