Canalscape Leads to Change

"Canalscape: An Authentic and Sustainable Desert Urbanism for Metropolitan Phoenix," a publication and exhibition, presents the potential for the Valley's canal banks to become amenities that would enhance the area's livability. Led by Nan Ellin, Canalscape builds on the earlier regional design framework and leads to demonstration projects throughout the metropolitan area. The ideas gain momentum when they are adopted by Arizona Forward, the Junior League and Salt River Project, which in turn leads to additional planning and design. In 2020, the Grand Canalscape, a 12-mile, continuous, multi-use recreational trail system along the Grand Canal in Phoenix, opens.
