Herberger Family as Benefactors

Robert Herberger, the program's earliest supporter and most generous donor, is awarded an honorary doctorate by ASU. In 1958, Robert, one of the AFASE founders, and his wife Kax purchased the AFASE solar demonstration home in Scottsdale and gave it to ASU. Their son, Gary Herberger, himself a former student of Frank Lloyd Wright, stepped forward in 1988 to help form the Council for Design Excellence (CDE) and was its first president. In 1990 the Herberger family's $500,000 gift to the college enabled the establishment of the Herberger Center for Design Excellence, ASU Architecture’s publishing and research arm.
