Roger Schluntz was the director of the architecture program. During his tenure, he oversaw national design competitions for the Design North building and the Nelson Fine Arts Center. Substantial community outreach resulted from his increased use of design and planning charrettes throughout the Phoenix area. This led to the creation of the Joint Urban Design Program with support from the city of Phoenix. He left ASU in 1992, eventually becoming dean of the School of Architecture and Planning at the University of New Mexico. In 2016 he was named an ACSA Distinguished Professor and was inaugurated as the 60th Chancellor of the AIA College of Fellows in 2021.
